The route

The trail connects Machico to Porto da Cruz along an old footpath once used by locals to travel between the two towns for trade. It follows a section of the famous Vereda do Larano, an historic royal path that was the main link between Porto da Cruz and Machico before modern roads were built.

⚠️ This is a demanding hike for experienced walkers: the path is narrow and vertiginous in sections, and can be slippery in wetter months. It passes some of Madeira's most striking rock formations and offers fantastic views where the island's lush green cliffs contrast with the deep blue Atlantic.
