The walk

The route starts at Praia da Calheta — the first beach in Madeira to import sand (from Morocco), inaugurated in 2004. Its two breakwaters keep the water calm and perfect for swimming. You walk or jog along the seafront promenade, and along the way there's a dedicated observation post ("vigia") for whale and dolphin watching — Madeira is one of the best places in the world for spotting cetaceans from shore, so bring binoculars and a little patience!

It's a short, relaxed, family-friendly stroll — more of a seafront walk than a mountain hike. Great for a rest day or to combine with a beach afternoon.
