The route

The trail is on Madeira's north coast, in the parish of São Jorge. It starts right next to the spas and natural pools of Calhau de São Jorge — a beautiful spot where the sea meets the steep hillside and where you can still see the old Porta do Mar, the historic ocean-facing entrance to the parish.

From there, the path climbs gently up the hillside, following the route of the old Royal Way (Caminho Real) through lush vegetation and agricultural areas, giving you lovely coastal and hillside views as you ascend.
