This circular route is set in Fanal, one of the most emblematic spots in the municipality of Porto Moniz, nestled between Ribeira da Janela and the Paúl da Serra plateau. The trail runs through the heart of the Madeira Laurissilva Forest, a UNESCO-listed primary forest — the largest surviving area of laurisilva anywhere, a subtropical laurel forest confined to Madeira, the Azores, and the Canary Islands.
Fanal is famous for its ancient, twisted Ocotea foetens (til) trees, often draped in mist, and the small Lagoa do Fanal — a picturesque pond that forms in the volcanic depression after rain. On a clear day you get sweeping views across the forested valleys; in the mist, the gnarled trees create an almost otherworldly atmosphere.
