This is a community route mapped on AllTrails — it is not part of Madeira's official PR trail network managed by IFCN (the regional government's forests & nature-conservation authority), so it has no official open/closed status and no guarantee of maintenance or signage. Check access and local conditions before setting out.
| Difficulty | Hard |
| Distance | 26.6 km (out & back) |
| Estimated time | 12–13 hours |
| Area | Madeira Natural Park |
| Community rating | ★ 4.7 from 398 hiker reviews on AllTrails |
The adventure starts near a small bar at the trailhead (note: no dedicated parking). You'll cross fields along small levadas until you reach the cliff edge, where the path turns west and serves up stunning coastline views for the rest of the route.
The trail can be narrow in places but is generally safe and very pleasant. As you approach the far end, you'll pass a small cable car — once used to cultivate fields on the coast — before continuing along the path to the turnaround point.
The full out-and-back is a long, demanding day at 26.6 km / 12–13 hr, so it's best suited for experienced, fit hikers. Allow plenty of daylight and bring enough water and food.
The approximate trailhead coordinates are 32.7329, -16.7643 (near Caniçal). Get directions from wherever you are:
Because this is not an official IFCN-recommended PR trail, there is no official open/closed status — check locally before you go, and be prepared for unsigned or less-maintained sections. For a shorter official alternative in the same area, the Vereda do Larano – Boca do Risco (also a community route, 11.9 km, moderate, ★4.7 from 1,498 reviews) covers the most scenic stretch to the Boca do Risco viewpoint.
