The Green Trail is a short, family-friendly walk through the Fanal area — one of Madeira's most magical landscapes. The route follows paths down towards the Fanal winter lagoon (Lagoa do Fanal) on a singletrack, then climbs back up towards the Posto Florestal on a forest track. The scenery is sublime: grand old Til trees scattered across green meadows, often enveloped in swirling mist, giving Fanal its otherworldly feel.
It's a pleasant route you can also do by bicycle, making it a great option for a gentle nature break — exercising body and mind in the heart of the Laurissilva forest.
Directions ↗ — the trailhead is near the Fanal area, in the Madeira Natural Park.
- Not an official IFCN trail — there is no managed open/closed status, no trail signage, and no guarantee of maintenance.
- Weather in Fanal changes rapidly — mist and low cloud can reduce visibility to near-zero even on a clear day elsewhere on the island.
- Check current conditions locally before setting out.
If you'd prefer a maintained, officially signposted route in the same area, these are close by:
- PR 6.2 – Levada do Alecrim (Easy, 3.5 km + 3.5 km return, ~2.5 h) — starts in Rabaçal
- PR 6.3 – Vereda da Lagoa do Vento (Easy, 1.8 km + 1.8 km return, ~1.5 h) — also from Rabaçal
