- Água D'Alto Waterfall Trail 4.5 Directions
This is a community route mapped on AllTrails — not part of Madeira's official PR (Percurso Recomendado) trail network managed by IFCN (the regional government's forests & nature-conservation authority). That means it has no official open/closed status and no maintenance/signage guarantee; check access and conditions locally before going.
The trail starts behind the church and at the top of the stairs in Água d'Alto, then follows the footpath of Levada de Água D'Alto out to the waterfall. The levada walk itself is easy and accessible, but it can become slippery and unstable after rain — and it's not recommended for people afraid of heights, as there are exposed sections near the waterfall slope. Once you reach the steep slope, you're rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding landscape and the waterfall itself.

There's also a longer route that reaches the same waterfall from a different starting point — Lombo Grande → Poço da Cecília → Água d'Alto Waterfall (4.5 km, out & back, ~2–2.5 hrs, moderate, 4.2★ from 25 reviews on AllTrails). It begins on the Lombo Grande footpath, passes through forest along a small stream, and visits Poço da Cecília — a natural pool — before reaching the waterfall. Directions to trailhead ↗
⚠️ Since neither route is an official IFCN trail, there's no guaranteed signage, maintenance, or official status update. Be particularly careful after rain, when the path gets slippery, and take caution near the exposed waterfall slope.
