This is not an official IFCN PR trail — it's an unofficial but popular local walk along the old ER101 coastal road near São Vicente, on Madeira's north coast. It connects the spectacular roadside Cascata da Água d'Alto waterfall with viewpoints and tunnels along the abandoned road, with Atlantic Ocean views throughout.
The highlight of the walk is the Cascata da Água d'Alto, a towering waterfall of approximately 80–150 m (the visible single drop is ~80 m, with the full cascade extending much higher up the cliff). It cascades directly down a sheer cliff face just west of São Vicente town centre, right beside the VE2 coastal road — you can literally see it from the road (European Waterfalls).
Key facts:
- Location: ~1.5 km west of São Vicente town, along the old ER101 / current VE2
- Best flow: October–March (after rain it's thunderous); it can slow to a trickle in dry summers (The Jolie)
- Roadside viewing: There's a small pull-in parking area directly in front of the waterfall, and a larger parking area at the restaurant A Cataplana a bit further along the road
⚠️ Caution: The parking area is right at the exit of a road tunnel on a fast-moving road — exit vehicles on the cliff side, and keep children close (The Jolie).
Beyond just viewing the waterfall from the road, the walk continues along the abandoned old ER101 road — now a pedestrian path through old tunnels with stunning ocean views (YouTube description).
What to expect:
- You enter through a tunnel near the waterfall, then follow the old road surface (asphalt) through several small tunnels
- The path offers magnificent Atlantic Ocean views and passes the Ribeira do Inferno stream
- Approx. ~2.15 km total length (per the YouTube trail description)
- The path eventually connects toward the Miradouro Nossa Senhora do Bom Caminho viewpoint area
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate — mostly flat old road, but some narrow sections and tunnel passages
⚠️ Important: This is not an official PR trail managed by IFCN. There is no maintained signage, no official open/closed status, and no maintenance guarantee. The trail can be overgrown and sections may be slippery. Check conditions locally before going.
This viewpoint in São Vicente offers panoramic views over the town, the valley, and the coast — it's the natural endpoint of the walk along the old road from the waterfall.
| Start point | Cascata da Água d'Alto (roadside parking near VE2 tunnel) |
| End point | Miradouro Nossa Senhora do Bom Caminho |
| Distance | ~2.15 km (one way along old road) |
| Difficulty | Easy–moderate (flat old road, tunnels, some narrow sections) |
| Bring | Torch/phone light for tunnels, grippy shoes (can be wet/slippery) |
| Official status | ❌ Not an official PR trail — no IFCN management or status |
| Driving from Funchal | ~30 min via VR1/VR4 to VE2 north coast |
| Bus | Line 139 (Funchal → Porto Moniz), get off at São Vicente (~2.5 hrs) |
Note: There are several waterfalls in Madeira called "Água d'Alto" — make sure you mean the São Vicente one, not the one near Faial/Santana (which is a different, separate levada walk).
Would you like me to check the weather forecast for São Vicente before you go, or find the nearest official PR trail in the area as an alternative?
