- Vereda da Ribeira da Janela 4.4 Directions
This is a community route mapped on AllTrails — it is not part of Madeira's official PR trail network managed by IFCN (the regional government's forests and nature-conservation authority). That means it has no official open/closed status and no guaranteed maintenance or signage, so check access and conditions locally before going.

The Levada da Ribeira da Janela lies a short distance from Porto Moniz, on Madeira's dramatic north coast. The levada follows the gorge of the Ribeira da Janela — one of the island's main watercourses — through lush laurel forest and along narrow irrigation channels carved into the hillside.
The route features several tunnels (bring a torch/headlamp). The first tunnel appears around the 3 km mark and takes roughly 10 minutes to traverse — it's long enough that you can't see the far end when you enter. Many older guidebooks recommend turning back here, but the trail beyond is generally described as in fair condition. After the tunnels, you continue to the Ribeiro do Galhano waterfall area, with spectacular scenery and peaceful picnic spots along the way.
Just ~500 m away is the official IFCN-managed trail covering the same area:
- PR 15 – Vereda da Ribeira da Janela: 2.7 km, moderate, ~1.5 hrs, from Curral Falso down to Ribeira da Janela village. Altitude drops from 820 m to 400 m. Visit Madeira page · 4.4★ from 119 reviews on AllTrails
- Access fee: €4.50 for visitors > 12 years (free for ≤ 12) via the SIMplifica portal
This official trail is shorter and easier — a good option if you want a maintained, signposted path in the same valley.
⚠️ Before you go: Since the Ribeiro do Galhano route is unofficial, there's no IFCN status update for it. Check current conditions locally, bring a headlamp for the tunnels, and be prepared for narrow sections with drops.
