The Levada do Caniçal – Boca do Risco – Miradouro do Paraíso route is a popular hike on Madeira's eastern side, in the municipality of Machico. However, it's important to know that this is not one of Madeira's official PR (Percurso Recomendado) trails managed by IFCN — the regional government's forests and nature authority. It's a community route mapped on AllTrails, so it has no official open/closed status, trail signage, or maintenance guarantee. Always check local conditions before setting out.

This fantastic trail starts near Caniçal, in the municipality of Machico, and follows two distinct sections:
1. Vereda Boca do Risco do Caniçal — The trail is spectacular here, winding through the agricultural landscape, regional flora, and Madeira's dramatic coastal scenery. You'll reach Boca do Risco, a breathtaking natural viewpoint where the mountain seems to open up, revealing sweeping views over the north coast, the vast Atlantic, and — on clear days — Ponta de São Lourenço and Penha d'Águia.
2. Levada do Caniçal — After the Boca do Risco section, the trail follows the levada (a former irrigation channel), with a clear view over Caniçal. This watercourse was once used as an irrigation system and today serves as a scenic walking path.
The Miradouro do Paraíso viewpoint sits along this route, offering one of the most stunning panoramas on Madeira's east side — well-named, as "paraíso" means paradise.

- ⚠️ Not an official IFCN trail — there is no official open/closed status, no trail signage, and no guaranteed maintenance. Check access and conditions locally before going.
- The path can be narrow and exposed in places along the cliffs near Boca do Risco — take extra caution, especially in wet or windy conditions.
- There is no access fee listed for this route (unlike the official PR trails in this area, e.g. PR 15 which charges €4.50).
