- Pico do Suna route 3.3 Directions
This is a community route mapped on AllTrails — it is not part of Madeira's official PR trail network managed by IFCN (the regional government's forests & nature-conservation authority), so it has no official open/closed status and no maintenance or signage guarantee. Check access and conditions locally before going.

This route combines two levadas — Levada da Serra do Faial and Levada do Furado — leading hikers up to Pico do Suna. The trail extends through stunning landscapes on Madeira's eastern side, with magnificent views of mountains and valleys, lush native vegetation including pine and eucalyptus trees, and passages through the Laurissilva forest (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The unique flora and fauna make this a memorable walk for nature lovers.
There's also a shorter, separate route directly to Pico do Suna:
| Distance | 6.0 km |
| Route type | Out and back |
| Difficulty | Moderate |
| Estimated time | 2–2.5 hours |
| Community rating | 3.3★ from 20 reviews on AllTrails |
This shorter path starts on a wide gravel trail and branches left up a steep dirt track (marked by a cairn/stone pile) — a more family-friendly way to reach Pico do Suna's summit views without the full levada commitment.
If you'd prefer an official IFCN-recommended trail in the same area, PR 10 Levada do Furado starts at Ribeiro Frio and runs to Portela — 11 km, moderate, ~5 hours. It follows the same levada system and shares some of the same stunning scenery, with the advantage of official signage and maintained paths. Note: an access fee of €4.50 (visitors >12 years; ≤12 free) applies via the SIMplifica portal.
⚠️ Before you go: Since the Serra do Faial – Furado – Pico do Suna route is unofficial, always check current trail conditions locally and be prepared for limited signage. Weather in the mountains can change quickly — want me to check the mountain forecast and IPMA warnings for the day you're planning to hike?
