This is a memorable trail that runs through an area where nature presents itself in its natural, undisturbed form. It presents hikers with various challenges — especially on rainy days — and is recommended for experienced hikers only.
The standout feature is the Levada do Seixal (or Levada das Feitas), which belongs to the Rocha Vermelha water system. The levada stretch is 3,265 m long, of which a whopping 2,285 m are inside tunnels — the remaining 980 m of open channel mostly runs along vertiginous terrain with sheer drops. Bring a good torch (headlamp preferred), as you'll be walking through long, dark tunnel sections where daylight doesn't reach.
The loop links three distinct paths — Lombo Barbinhas, the Levada do Seixal, and Vereda das Feitas — taking you through the rugged, misty Laurissilva landscape of the north coast's high country, near Seixal and Porto Moniz.
- Long, dark tunnels — a headlamp is essential; a backup light is wise.
- Vertiginous sections — the open-channel parts of the levada have exposed drops; not suitable if you're uncomfortable with heights.
- Slippery when wet — rain makes the rock and levada path treacherous; avoid after heavy rain.
- No official status — this trail is neither signed nor maintained by IFCN. Wayfinding can be challenging; download the AllTrails map for offline use.
- High altitude (~1,382 m) — fog can roll in quickly and reduce visibility to near zero.
