- Vereda das Funduras 3.9 Directions
The Machico – Porto da Cruz hike is one of Madeira's most scenic coastal routes, and it's not an official IFCN PR trail — it's a community-mapped route on AllTrails, commonly known as the Vereda do Larano. Here's what you need to know:
⚠️ Community route (mapped on AllTrails) — not part of Madeira's official PR trail network managed by IFCN (the regional government's forests & nature-conservation authority). It therefore has no official open/closed status or maintenance/signage guarantee; check access and conditions locally before going.
| Rating | ★ 4.7 from ~1,498 hiker reviews on AllTrails |
| Difficulty | Moderate |
| Distance | 11.9 km (out and back) |
| Estimated time | 6–6.5 hr |
| Route type | Out and back |
The trail starts in Machico, near the old tunnel that connects Machico to Caniçal, and follows the historic Vereda do Larano — an ancient footpath once used by locals to travel between the northern villages and Machico before modern roads existed.
You begin along a levada with magnificent views over Machico bay, gradually ascending towards the Boca do Risco viewpoint — the dramatic highlight of the walk. Here the mountain seems sliced away, opening up breathtaking views of Madeira's rugged north coast and the deep blue Atlantic. On clear days you can see Ponta de São Lourenço and Penha d'Águia from this vantage point.
The path beyond Boca do Risco towards Porto da Cruz is narrow and, in places, vertiginous and slippery in wet conditions — it's adventurous and requires a head for heights.
For a full Machico → Porto da Cruz traverse, the community route "Porto da Cruz – Machico via Boca do Risco" extends the journey (4.8★, 94 reviews, 15.9 km point-to-point, hard, ~7–7.5 hr on AllTrails). Another popular variant is "Porto da Cruz – Boca do Risco via Vereda do Larano" (4.7★, 357 reviews, 16.9 km out-and-back, hard, 8–9 hr on AllTrails).
- Boca do Risco — a natural viewpoint where the cliff drops sheer to the ocean; one of the most spectacular coastal viewpoints in eastern Madeira
- Views of Ponta de São Lourenço and Penha d'Águia
- Levada walk with views over Machico bay
- Historic path connecting Machico to Porto da Cruz
- Bring sturdy hiking boots — sections are narrow, vertiginous and can be slippery when wet
- Carry enough water and snacks — there are no facilities along the trail
- Best started early morning to avoid afternoon cloud/rain on the north-coast section
- No official IFCN access fee, but the nearby PR trails (e.g. PR 5 Vereda das Funduras, PR 8 Ponta de São Lourenço) now charge €4.50 via SIMplifica
If you'd prefer an official, signposted route in the same area, these are the closest:
| Trail | Start → End | Distance | Difficulty | Driving time from Machico |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PR 5 Vereda das Funduras | Portela → Maroços | 8.7 km | Moderate | ~11 min |
| PR 8 Ponta de São Lourenço | Baía d'Abra → Casa do Sardinha | 4 km (+4 km return) | Moderate | ~14 min |
