- Camacha - Levada Dos Tornos 4.1 Directions
The route you're asking about follows the Levada dos Tornos near the village of Camacha (municipality of Santa Cruz), passing through the Madre de Água area and the Naturfreundehaus Madeira (a Friends of Nature house — a mountain hut/run by the Austrian Naturfreunde association).
Here's what our trail data holds:
⚠️ Community route (mapped on AllTrails) — not part of Madeira's official PR (Percurso Recomendado) trail network managed by IFCN, the Madeira regional government's forests & nature-conservation authority. It therefore has no official open/closed status and no maintenance/signage guarantee; check access and conditions locally before going.

| Difficulty | Hard |
| Distance | 22.4 km (out & back) |
| Estimated time | 6.5–7.5 hr |
| Start | Near Igreja Matriz da Camacha |
| Route type | Out and back |
The walk starts next to the Igreja Matriz da Camacha (Camacha's parish church) and follows the Levada dos Tornos through relatively flat terrain, making the going easier underfoot. In the rainy season, small water points and mini waterfalls cross the full width of the path — non-slip footwear is strongly recommended.
The route passes through the Madre de Água area and by the Naturfreundehaus Madeira, a mountain refuge run by the Austrian Naturfreunde (Friends of Nature) association — a handy landmark and rest point along the levada.
⚠️ Since this is not an official IFCN trail, always verify current access and conditions locally before setting out. The Naturfreundehaus may also have its own opening schedule — check ahead if you plan to stop there.
