- Path of Funduras 4.1 Directions
Here's what I know about the Path of Funduras (Caminho das Funduras):
This is a community route mapped on AllTrails — it is not part of Madeira's official PR (Percurso Recomendado) trail network managed by IFCN, the regional government's forests and nature-conservation authority. That means it has no official open/closed status and no guarantee of maintenance or waymarking. Check access and conditions locally before setting out.

This is a circular route starting and ending at the Miradouro da Portela, with magnificent views over Madeira's north coast. It runs through the Machico mountain range on the south side of the island. You cross small villages before reaching the forest area of the Funduras Mountains, then enter the path through the interior of the Laurissilva forest. The Casa das Funduras (a forestry support house) lies a little further along the route.

- No official status — since this isn't an IFCN-managed trail, signage and path conditions can vary. Ask locally about current access.
- It's rated hard — at 16.4 km and 6+ hours with mountain terrain and forest sections, it's a demanding day hike. Bring water, food, and proper gear.
- Check the weather — mountain conditions change fast on Madeira.
Want me to check the mountain forecast and IPMA weather warnings for the day you're planning to go, or find official PR trails near Machico as an alternative?
