The walk starts near the Barragem do Pico da Urze (Pico da Urze Dam), surrounded by mountainous landscapes and the cool, misty atmosphere typical of Madeira's high plateaus. You climb through heather bushes and endemic vegetation, and as you progress the scenery becomes rockier and more imposing, until you reach Pico Fernandes, where you're rewarded with a spectacular view over the deep valleys below. Another highlight along the route is the Lagoa do Lajeado (Lajeado Lagoon), a place of extreme tranquillity and natural beauty.
The trailhead is on Paul da Serra, Madeira's central plateau. Directions to trailhead ↗ — this links to Google Maps routing from your own location.
There's a longer, more demanding combination route that also visits Pico Fernandes and Pico da Urze:
- Levada das 25 Fontes – Pico Fernandes – Pico da Urze — 16.3 km loop, hard difficulty, 4.2★ from 111 reviews. This circular route combines the famous Levada das 25 Fontes with visits to Pico Fernandes and Pico da Urze peaks, a waterfall, and the dam. Also a community route, not an official IFCN PR trail.
⚠️ Important: Since this isn't an official trail, there's no official status to check — always assess conditions locally. Weather on Paul da Serra can change fast (fog, wind, rain), especially at altitude.
