This is a community route mapped on AllTrails — it is not part of Madeira's official PR (Percurso Recomendado) trail network managed by IFCN, the regional government's forests and nature-conservation authority. That means it has no official open/closed status and no guarantee of maintenance or signage — check access and conditions locally before going.
| Distance | 4.2 km (loop) |
| Difficulty | Hard |
| Estimated time | 2.5 – 3 hr |
| Location | Madeira Natural Park, north of Machico |
| Community rating | 4.4★ from 171 hiker reviews on AllTrails ↗ |
| Trailhead | Miradouro do Pico do Facho picnic area |
The loop starts at the Miradouro do Pico do Facho picnic area, which already gives you a sweeping panoramic view over the Machico valley, the peaks of the central mountain range, the Desertas Islands, and Ponta de São Lourenço.
From there, a path leads up to the summit of Pico do Facho — historically significant as the spot where large bonfires (fachos) were lit to warn the population of approaching enemy ships. After the summit, the trail descends past the Caniçal tunnel area and continues down through paths that lead towards Machico Beach and the Fort of Nossa Senhora do Amparo, a small triangular fortification facing the ocean, before looping back to the start.
The "hard" rating comes from some steep, rocky sections — proper footwear and caution are essential.
- No official status — this trail is not maintained or signposted by IFCN, so there are no official open/closed updates for it.
- Check locally before setting out — ask at the Machico tourist office or check with locals for current path conditions.
- Watch for steep, narrow sections, especially near the summit and on the descent.
- There is no access fee listed for this route (it's not in the SIMplifica system, unlike official PR trails).
Would you like me to check the weather forecast and IPMA warnings for the Machico area for when you're planning to go, or find the closest official PR trails near Machico as an alternative?
