- Pico do Suna route 3.3 Directions
The Pico do Suna route is a community-mapped trail on AllTrails — it is not part of Madeira's official PR (Percurso Recomendado) trail network managed by IFCN (the regional government's forests and nature authority). This means it has no official open/closed status, no maintained signage, and no guarantee of upkeep — always check access and conditions locally before heading out.

The walk starts gently on a wide gravel path that winds uphill. After about 30 minutes, you turn left down a steep dirt path, marked by a cairn (a pile of stones left by previous hikers). Despite being a mountain route, there are no significant obstacles — it's described as a pleasant way to explore the peaks with the family, and you get incredible views of some of Madeira's highest summits without any technical climbing.

There's also a much longer community route that reaches Pico do Suna via two levadas:
| Difficulty | Hard |
| Distance | 18.5 km (out and back) |
| Estimated time | 6.5 – 7 hours |
| Route type | Out and back |
| Community rating | ★ 4.0 (31 reviews on AllTrails) |
This one combines the Levada Serra do Faial and the Levada do Furado, passing through the UNESCO-listed Laurissilva forest with stunning mountain and valley views, native pine and eucalyptus woodland. It's a far more demanding undertaking — budget a full day.
⚠️ Remember: Neither of these is an official IFCN-maintained trail. There's no official status report for them, so check locally for current conditions and access before setting out.
