Check access and conditions locally before going.

The trail begins in Fanal, one of Madeira's most atmospheric spots — centuries-old laurel trees with twisted, gnarled shapes, often shrouded in fog, creating an almost mystical setting. This laurel forest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the hike crosses right through it.
As you progress, the trail gradually climbs through the dense forest, opening up to spectacular views over the verdant valleys and the Atlantic Ocean, before culminating at Pico Pedreira — the summit that gives the trail its name.
Fanal is roughly a 28-minute drive from Porto Moniz or about 55 minutes from Funchal. There's a small car park near the Fanal viewpoint/forestry house where the trail starts.
- No official status — this is not an IFCN-managed PR trail, so there are no official waymarks, no monitored open/closed status, and no guarantee of maintenance or signage.
- Weather in the Fanal area changes rapidly; the fog that makes it magical can also reduce visibility to near-zero. The terrain can be wet, muddy, and slippery underfoot.
- Always check conditions locally before setting out, and consider combining it with one of the official PR trails nearby if you'd prefer marked and maintained routes.
