This is a community route mapped on AllTrails — not part of Madeira's official PR trail network managed by IFCN (the regional government's forests & nature authority). It therefore has no official open/closed status and no guaranteed maintenance or signage; check access and conditions locally before going.
Starting point: Ponta do Sol beach
Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: 7.7 km (out and back)
Estimated time: 3–3.5 hours
Rating: ★ 4.2 (51 hiker reviews on AllTrails)
Route type: Out and back
This historic and serene trail starts at Ponta do Sol beach and follows the millennia-old Levada do Moinho. It offers the chance to immerse yourself in the history of Madeira's sugar cane cycle. The levada, built at the end of the 15th century, was essential for irrigating the land of the Flemish settler João Esmeraldo and powering the various watermills (moinhos — hence the levada's name). The ruins of those old watermills can still be seen along the way.
There's a very popular circular trail that combines both Levada Nova and Levada do Moinho:
Distance: 9.3 km (loop) | Difficulty: Moderate | Rating: ★ 4.7 (6,103 reviews!) | Estimated time: ~3–4 hours
This route offers views over the valleys and traditional poios (terraced farmland), passes the ruins of old watermills, and features the famous Levada Nova waterfall. There's a tunnel carved through the rock — bring a flashlight!
