The Levada da Portela follows one of Madeira's historic irrigation channels along the mountain slopes, winding through the lush laurel forest of the Natural Park. The route offers spectacular views of Madeira's mountains, forests, valleys and rivers, passing many endemic plant species and birds along the way. It's described as relatively gentle, requiring no special skills, though the "moderate" rating and 11 km length mean you should be prepared for a half-day walk.
The trail starts near the Miradouro da Portela viewpoint (one of Madeira's most iconic lookouts, perched between Santo da Serra and Portela), which itself rewards with sweeping panoramas across the valley and coast.

- No official status: This is not an IFCN-recommended PR trail, so there's no official open/closed status. Check current conditions locally before going.
- No fee information: Since it's unofficial, no access-fee details are available through the official system.
The area around Portela is also the starting point for the official PR 10 — Levada do Furado, which shares part of the levada network. If you'd prefer a trail with official status, signage and maintenance, that may be a good alternative — want me to look it up?
