This route connects the village of Porto da Cruz to the stunning Boca do Risco viewpoint along the historic Vereda do Larano — an ancient footpath that, before modern roads, was the vital link between the northern coast populations and Machico. It's considered one of Madeira's most impressive coastal walks, with a dramatic contrast between the deep blue Atlantic and the lush green cliffs.
⚠️ Important: This is a community-mapped route on AllTrails — it is not part of Madeira's official PR trail network managed by IFCN (the regional government's forests & nature-conservation authority). That means it has no official open/closed status and no maintained signage or guarantee of upkeep. Check access and conditions locally before setting out.

Starting from Porto da Cruz on the north coast, the trail follows the Vereda do Larano — the old royal path (caminho real) that once served as the main route between Porto da Cruz and Machico. You climb through terraced farmland and laurel forest before the path narrows and becomes more vertiginous as it hugs the cliff face high above the ocean. The highlight is reaching Boca do Risco, a natural viewpoint where the mountain seems to have been sliced away, revealing an unobstructed panorama of the vast Atlantic, with Ponta de São Lourenço and Penha d'Águia visible in the distance.
- The path is narrow and vertiginous in sections, with sheer drops — not for anyone with vertigo or a fear of heights.
- Can be slippery in wetter months.
- It's a long route (16.9 km out-and-back) rated hard — allow a full day and start early.
- There is no official IFCN open/closed status for this trail, so conditions can change. Check locally.
The Vereda do Larano – Boca do Risco starting from Machico (shorter approach) is a popular variant:
| Machico variant | Porto da Cruz variant | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance | 11.9 km | 16.9 km |
| Difficulty | Moderate | Hard |
| Time | 6–6.5 hr | 8–9 hr |
| Rating | 4.7★ (1,498 reviews) | 4.7★ (357 reviews) |
The Machico start is easier and more popular, beginning near the old tunnel that connects Machico to Caniçal and following the levada to Boca do Risco. Both converge at the same viewpoint. See the Machico variant on AllTrails.
