This is a community route mapped on AllTrails — it is not part of Madeira's official PR (Percurso Recomendado) trail network managed by IFCN (the regional government's forests & nature authority). That means it has no official open/closed status, no guarantee of maintenance or signage, and no IFCN access-fee system — always check local conditions before setting out.

The route follows the famous Vereda do Larano — an ancient footpath that was once the main route connecting Porto da Cruz and Machico before modern roads were built. The highlight is reaching Boca do Risco, a dramatic natural viewpoint where the mountain seems to have been sliced away, revealing an unobstructed view of the vast Atlantic and Ponta de São Lourenço in the distance.
From there, the trail climbs to Pico do Furado and Pico da Coroa, rewarding you with a privileged aerial view over the Ribeira Seca Valley.
Because this is a loop, you'll experience a satisfying variety — coastal cliffs, lush laurel-forest sections, and mountain ridges — all in one hike.
- Not an official IFCN trail — no official status, maintenance, or signage guarantee. Trail conditions can change; check locally before going.
- Hard difficulty — the climb to Pico do Furado and Pico da Coroa is steep and exposed in places; good footwear and fitness are essential.
- Narrow, vertiginous sections — parts of the Larano path run along cliff edges; not recommended in wet or foggy weather.
- No IFCN access fee applies (it's not in their system), but this also means no ranger patrols or official rescue markers.
If you want shorter or more popular variants sharing part of this route:
| Trail | Distance | Difficulty | Rating | Route type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vereda do Larano – Boca do Risco | 11.9 km | Moderate | 4.7★ (1,498 reviews) | Out & back |
| Porto da Cruz – Boca do Risco via Vereda do Larano | 16.9 km | Hard | 4.7★ (357 reviews) | Out & back |
Both are also community routes (not official PR trails).
Would you like me to check the mountain weather forecast and IPMA warnings for the day you're planning to hike? That's the key safety check for this kind of exposed coastal-ridge route.
