This is a community route (mapped on AllTrails) — not part of Madeira's official PR (Percurso Recomendado) trail network managed by IFCN, the regional government's forests and nature-conservation authority. It therefore has no official open/closed status and no maintenance or signage guarantee; check access and conditions locally before going.

This trail connects the village of Porto da Cruz to the stunning Boca do Risco viewpoint, following the Vereda do Larano — a historically vital path that once linked the northern populations to Machico before modern roads existed. The walk is considered one of Madeira's most impressive coastal hikes, offering a striking contrast between the deep blue of the Atlantic and the green of the cliffs.
The highlight is the arrival at Boca do Risco, a natural viewpoint where the mountain seems to have been sliced away, revealing an unobstructed view of the vast ocean and Ponta de São Lourenço in the distance.
⚠️ Because this is an unofficial community route, there is no official trail status to check. Conditions can change, and parts of the path (especially along the cliff edge near Boca do Risco) can be exposed and potentially risky — exercise extra caution, especially in wet or windy weather.
If the full Porto da Cruz route feels too long, there's a popular shorter variant that starts from Machico instead:
Vereda do Larano – Boca do Risco — 11.9 km out & back, moderate difficulty, estimated 6–6.5 hr, 4.7★ from 1,498 reviews on AllTrails ↗ · Directions ↗
This starts near the old tunnel connecting Machico to Caniçal, follows the levada with beautiful views over Machico bay, and reaches the same breathtaking Boca do Risco viewpoint — from which you can see Ponta de São Lourenço, Penha d'Águia, and the island's north coast. It's also a community route (not an official IFCN PR trail), with no official open/closed status.
