The route leads up the iconic Penha de Águia — one of Madeira's most striking geological landmarks. This towering rock formation, close to 600 m high, dominates the coastline between Porto da Cruz and Faial. The path to the summit is steep and challenging, rewarding hikers with sweeping panoramic views over the Atlantic and the surrounding north coast.
The trail starts at Caminho D. Sebastião, where there are a few bars nearby for a refreshment before or after. Given the exposed, steep ascent, good footwear, plenty of water, and sun protection are essential — and it's best avoided in wet or windy conditions.
- This is not an official IFCN-recommended PR trail — there is no official open/closed status, no guaranteed signage, and no maintained infrastructure along the route.
- Check local conditions and access before setting out — ask locally or check recent reports on AllTrails.
- The ascent is exposed and steep; it demands a good level of fitness and sure-footedness.
