Tell me about the PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo hike in Madeira
💭 Thinking
The user is asking about the PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo hike in Madeira. I should use the find_hikes tool to get detailed information about this specific trail, including its status, difficulty, distance, duration, and otherdetails. The find_hikes query returned 0 results for "PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo". Let me try a broader search - maybe the trail code format is different, or I should search by name. Actually, looking at the result more carefully, the count is 0 and hikes array is empty. But the note suggests this is an evergreen trail guide. Let me try a different query approach - perhaps searching for just "Pico Ruivo" or "PR 1.2". Wait, actually, looking at the result again - it says count:0 and hikes:[]. This means the tool didn't find any matching trail. But the note about "evergreen trail guide" seems like a static instruction rather than actual trail data. Let me try again with different parameters. Let me try searching for just "Pico Ruivo" to find the trail.I found the PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo trail details. Let me compile the key information from the results: - PR Code: PR 1.2 - Name: Vereda do Pico Ruivo - Route: Achada do Teixeira – Pico Ruivo - Distance: 2.8 km (+2.8 km return) - Difficulty: Moderate - Duration: 1:30 hours - Start point: Achada do Teixeira - End point: Pico Ruivo - Max altitude: 1,857 m - Min altitude: 1,852 m (this seems odd — very flat, but it's the official data) - Access fee: €4.50 for visitors > 12 years, exempt for ≤ 12 years (via SIMplifica portal) - Managing entity: IFCN - Region: Madeira There's no alltrails rating for this specific trail (unlike PR 1 which has 4.6★ from 4384 reviews, PR 1.1 with 4.6★ from 161 reviews, etc.). There's a YouTube video available: yxZ5CEq-gHM Webcam: Achada do Teixeira The status field is empty — the note says this is an evergreen page and status is deliberately omitted. I should not state any status. I should tell the reader to check the current trail status on OpenMadeira before setting out. Let me also note the directions_url for getting there. The user asked in English, so I'll respond in English. I'll also embed the YouTube video and mention the photos from walkmeguide.com.

The hike

Starting at Achada do Teixeira (the trailhead is right by the car park), the path climbs steadily through ericaceous heath and impressive volcanic rock formations, including the famous Homem em Pé (Standing Man) — a basalt column that resembles a human figure. The trail is well-maintained, with steps carved into the rock and tunnels through the ridge.

As you near the summit, the vegetation gives way to bare rock and sweeping 360° views across the entire island — on a clear day you can see the north and south coasts simultaneously. The final stretch involves a short staircase up to the Pico Ruivo summit shelter and viewpoint, the highest point in Madeira at 1,862 m.

It's an out-and-back trail — you return the same way.

Getting there & conditions

⚠️ Always check the current trail status before setting out. Mountain weather can change fast — at nearly 1,900 m, fog, wind and cold can arrive quickly. I can check today's IPMA weather warnings and mountain forecast for you if you're planning to go.
