The Levada do Furado is one of Madeira's classic levada walks, starting at Ribeiro Frio in the lush laurel forest and winding steadily eastward to Portela overlooking the stunning bay of Machico. The path follows the levada (irrigation channel) along the hillside through dense laurissilva — Madeira's UNESCO-listed laurel forest — with mossy walls, giant ferns, and endemic trees shading much of the route. You'll pass through several hand-carved tunnels and across narrow footbridges over the water channel, with views that open up over deep valleys and dramatic mountain slopes. Birdsong from species like the Madeira redstart is a constant companion.
The trail is moderately demanding: it's long at 11 km, and while the gradient is generally gentle (the levada follows the contour), the exposed sections, tunnel passages and occasional narrow stretches require sure-footedness.
This trail requires payment through the SIMplifica portal:
- €4.50 — visitors over 12 years
- Free — visitors 12 years and under
