Vereda dos Balcões is one of Madeira's shortest and most rewarding official trails — an easy walk through lush laurel forest that ends at the stunning Balcões viewpoint, perched above the Ribeira do Metade valley with sweeping views across the central mountain ridge (on a clear day you can spot Pico Ruivo and Pico do Areeiro).
| Difficulty | Easy |
| Distance | 1.5 km one way (+ 1.5 km return) |
| Duration | ~1 h 30 min (round trip) |
| Altitude | 870 m → 880 m (practically flat) |
| Route | Ribeiro Frio → Balcões (out-and-back) |
| Managing entity | IFCN (regional government) |
| Access fee | €4.50 (visitors > 12 years) · Free (≤ 12 years) — pay via the SIMplifica portal |
The trail starts at Ribeiro Frio, on the ER 103 road (the same starting point as the longer PR 10 Levada do Furado). You follow a levada path through dense laurissilva (laurel forest), a UNESCO World Heritage site, with the shade of hundred-year-old trees and the sound of running water alongside you. The terrain is almost completely flat — only about 10 m of elevation gain — making this one of the most accessible levada walks on the island.
At the end you reach the Balcões belvedere, a railing viewpoint jutting out over the deep, green valley of Ribeira do Metade. It's one of Madeira's most iconic viewpoints — a perfect photo spot and a peaceful place to take in the landscape before heading back the same way.
- By car: Ribeiro Frio is on the ER 103 between Funchal and Santana, about 25–30 min from Funchal.

- By bus: Ribeiro Frio is served by regional buses; I can look up connections if you tell me where you're coming from.
Check the current trail status on OpenMadeira before setting out — conditions can change, especially after heavy rain. Also check the mountain weather forecast and IPMA warnings, as the Ribeiro Frio area sits at nearly 900 m and can be cloudy or wet.
