Starting at the Miradouro da Portela, you're rewarded right away with sweeping views over Machico and the north coast. The path then winds through small rural villages before entering the Funduras Mountains forest zone, where you'll walk through dense Laurissilva — Madeira's ancient laurel forest, a UNESCO World Heritage habitat. The route passes by the Casa das Funduras, a forestry support building, before descending gradually towards Maroços through terraced farmland and ever-changing vistas of the valley below.

Also on AllTrails: There's a longer community-mapped route called "Path of Funduras" — a 16.4 km loop (rated hard, ~6–6.5 hr, 4.1★ from 27 reviews). This is a community route mapped on AllTrails, not part of Madeira's official PR trail network managed by IFCN, so it has no official open/closed status or maintenance guarantee. (AllTrails page)
