One of Madeira's most iconic and popular levada walks, the Levada das 25 Fontes takes you through lush laurel forest to a magical lagoon where 25 natural springs cascade down a mossy rock face — the "25 Fountains" that give the trail its name.

Starting at the Rabaçal parking area on the Paul da Serra plateau (over 1,200 m), you descend along the levada through dense Laurissilva forest — a UNESCO World Heritage laurel forest unique to Macaronesia. The path follows the water channel carved into the hillside, with occasional viewpoints over the Rabaçal valley. The highlight is the lagoon at 25 Fontes, where dozens of small springs seep and cascade down a vertical rock wall into a clear pool — a stunning, tranquil spot and the turnaround point before the return climb.

Before you go: check the current trail status on OpenMadeira — conditions and closures change, especially after heavy rain. And always check the mountain weather forecast and IPMA warnings for the Rabaçal area, which sits above 1,200 m and can be foggy or wet even when Funchal is sunny.
