The trail descends through lush laurisilva forest, following the levada through the namesake tunnel (bring a torch/headlamp — it's unlit and can be wet underfoot). The tunnel opens onto stunning views of the Rabaçal valley waterfalls and forested slopes. Once through, you arrive at Casa do Rabaçal, where you can connect to longer routes like the Levada das 25 Fontes and Levada do Risco.
⭐ 4.6 / 5 from 595 hiker reviews on AllTrails — a well-loved route! Hikers highlight the forest, river, waterfall views and the thrill of the tunnel itself. Estimated total time (including connections) is 5–5.5 hours.
⚠️ Before you go, check the trail's current open/closed/restricted status — it can change due to maintenance or weather. You can check it right here on OpenMadeira, or on the IFCN site.
Also bring a torch or headlamp for the tunnel, and wear waterproof shoes — it can be wet inside.
