The Rota da Levada do Moinho is a beautiful levada walk near Ponta do Sol, on Madeira's sunny south coast. It follows one of the island's historic irrigation channels through lush agricultural land with sweeping views over the valley and the picturesque village of Ponta do Sol.
Important: This is a community route mapped on AllTrails — it is not part of Madeira's official PR (Percurso Recomendado) trail network managed by IFCN (the regional government's forests & nature-conservation authority). It therefore has no official open/closed status and no maintenance/signage guarantee; check access and conditions locally before going.

The trail unfolds along the Levada do Moinho, starting in the agricultural area of Lombada da Ponta do Sol. As you walk, you'll pass through well-cultivated farmland (the traditional poios) with pleasant views of the valley below. The route rewards hikers with:
- Panoramic landscapes over the valley and the village of Ponta do Sol
- Endemic flora and fauna along the levada banks
- Waterfalls cascading down the hillside
- A glimpse into Madeira's rural, agricultural heritage
The trailhead is near the Church of Lombada in Ponta do Sol municipality, on the south coast of Madeira — roughly a 25–30 minute drive from Funchal.
There is also an official PR 7 — Levada do Moinho, which is a different trail on the north coast near Porto Moniz, managed by IFCN. PR 7 is a 10.5 km moderate trail from Ribeira da Cruz to Lamaceiros/Junqueira, and it requires a €4.50 access fee (via the SIMplifica portal). If you meant that one, let me know!
Since the Rota da Levada do Moinho is not an official IFCN trail, there's no formal open/closed status to check. Always verify local conditions before setting out, especially after heavy rain, as levada paths can become slippery or obstructed.
Would you like me to check the mountain forecast and IPMA weather warnings for the day you plan to hike, or look into how to get there by bus?
