This trail is a community route mapped on AllTrails — it is not part of Madeira's official PR (Percurso Recomendado) trail network managed by IFCN (the regional government's forests & nature-conservation authority), so it has no official open/closed status and no maintenance or signage guarantee. Check access and conditions locally before going.

| Difficulty | Hard |
| Length | 3.5 km (out & back) |
| Estimated time | 2 – 2.5 hours |
| Start point | Caminho D. Sebastião (near Porto da Cruz) |
| Area | Machico municipality, northeast Madeira |
Penha de Águia is one of Madeira's most striking geological symbols — a sheer rock promontory rising nearly 600 m from the coast, separating Porto da Cruz from Faial. The vereda climbs to the summit on a path that demands a real sense of adventure and challenge. The route starts at Caminho D. Sebastião (with a couple of bars nearby if you want a pre- or post-hike drink), then ascends steeply through rugged terrain to the top, where you're rewarded with sweeping views of the Atlantic and the deep valleys below.
Because this is not an official IFCN trail, there is no managed signage, no guaranteed path maintenance, and no official status to check against. Exercise extra caution, especially after rain or in wet conditions — the rock can be slippery.

If you'd like a longer or circular variation, there are three more community routes in the same area:
| Route | Difficulty | Length | Rating | Reviews |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cruz – Porto da Cruz – Penha de Águia – Ribeira do Faial | Hard | 7.9 km (loop) | 4.4★ | 34 |
| Porto da Cruz – Penha de Águia – Penha de Água | Hard | 5.5 km (point to point) | 4.4★ | 28 |
| Miradouros de Penha de Água e Penha de Águia | Hard | 4.7 km (out & back) | 3.6★ | 28 |
All three are also community (unofficial) routes — not part of the IFCN PR network.
Would you like me to check the mountain weather forecast and IPMA warnings for the day you're planning to go, or find the closest official PR trail to that area as an alternative?
