The route follows a section of the popular Levada do Norte, crossing the villages of Eira do Mourão and Espigão on Madeira's south side. Levadas are the island's traditional irrigation channels, and walking alongside one gives you a mix of lush hillside vegetation, open views over the valleys and coast, and the chance to see rural Madeiran life up close.
The highlight is the Miradouro do Espigão viewpoint, which rewards you with sweeping views over the deep valley of Ribeira Brava and the surrounding peaks of the Serra de Água and Encumeada ranges.
The approximate trailhead is near Boa Morte, in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos — Directions ↗.
- Not an official IFCN trail — there is no official open/closed status, waymarking, or maintenance guarantee. Conditions can change (landslides, overgrowth, tunnel access).
- Tunnels — this route passes through the Tunnel do Espigão; carry a head torch and be prepared for narrow, wet sections.
- Check locally (or with your accommodation) whether the route is currently passable before committing to it.
Related trail: There's also a shorter, steeper Vereda do Espigão (4.8 km, hard, ~3 h, out and back) that goes directly to the Espigão viewpoint from a slightly different start point — AllTrails · Directions ↗. Same unofficial status applies.
