This is a long, demanding route that winds through the small towns of Santo António da Serra, Porto da Cruz and Faial, crossing both urban and rural areas amid the dense, lush vegetation typical of Madeira. It's ideal for hikers wanting to experience the island's villages and cultural traditions — in Porto da Cruz you can visit the old sugar-cane factory (engenho), which still operates the same way as when it started.
The route is quite long at nearly 27 km, so plan for a full day and ensure you have transport arranged at the end (or be prepared to hike back).
Want me to check the mountain weather forecast and IPMA warnings for the day you're planning to go, or look at shorter official PR trails in the same area as alternatives?
