This trail sits right in Parque das Queimadas, in the municipality of Santana on Madeira's north coast. Setting off from the park's charming thatched-roof shelter house (Casa de Abrigo das Queimadas), the path drops you straight into the lush laurisilva — Madeira's ancient laurel forest, a UNESCO World Heritage habitat.
You'll wander through dense, moss-draped vegetation, past crystal-clear streams and natural tunnels formed by centuries-old trees. The path is described as gentle and accessible, making it ideal for a relaxing stroll rather than a strenuous hike. It's a wonderful taster of the Queimadas area's magical atmosphere without committing to the longer, more demanding routes.
The park itself is a lovely spot — beyond the hiking trails, it has picnic areas, a small pond, and the thatched-roof shelter house that preserves the traditional architectural style of Santana's typical houses. The Queimadas area is also the starting point for the famous PR 9 – Levada do Caldeirão Verde (an official IFCN trail), if you're looking for something longer.
