⚠️ Important: This is a community route mapped on AllTrails — it is not part of Madeira's official PR (Percurso Recomendado) trail network managed by IFCN, the regional government's forests and nature-conservation authority. It therefore has no official open/closed status and no maintenance or signage guarantee; check access and conditions locally before going.
What it is
Penha d'Águia is one of the most iconic landmarks of Madeira's northeast — an immense volcanic cone rising almost 600 m majestically above the Atlantic Ocean, between Faial and Porto da Cruz. This trail takes you to explore its surroundings and, in some sections, to climb the imposing rock formation, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the coast and the sea. Along the route you can appreciate Madeira's characteristic lush vegetation and dramatic landscape contrasts between mountain and ocean.

- Check current trail conditions locally before setting out
- Wear proper hiking footwear and carry water
- Avoid the trail in wet or foggy conditions — the rock can be slippery
