This is a community route mapped on AllTrails — it is not part of Madeira's official PR (Percurso Recomendado) trail network managed by IFCN, the regional government's forests and nature-conservation authority. That means it has no official open/closed status and no guarantee of maintenance or signage, so check access and conditions locally before setting out.

The trail follows the famous Vereda do Larano, an ancient royal road that was the main route connecting Porto da Cruz and Machico before modern roads were built. The path takes you along dramatic coastal cliffs before reaching the show-stopping Boca do Risco viewpoint — a place where the mountain seems to have been sliced away, revealing an unobstructed sweep of the vast Atlantic and Ponta de São Lourenço in the distance.
From there, the route climbs to Pico do Furado and Pico da Coroa, rewarding you with a privileged aerial view over the Ribeira Seca Valley. This summit section is what pushes the trail into "hard" territory — the ascent is steep and exposed in places.
- No official status — this is not an IFCN-managed PR trail. There is no official open/closed monitoring, no trail signage guarantee, and no fee structure. Check local conditions before you go.
- Terrain — the Larano coastal section is narrow and vertiginous in places; the Pico do Furado / Pico da Coroa climb is steep and exposed. Not suitable in wet or very windy weather.

Since this route is unofficial, you may also want to consider the IFCN-recommended official trails in the same area. Want me to find the closest official PR trails near Machico or Porto da Cruz?
Also — before you plan to go, would you like me to check the mountain forecast and IPMA weather warnings for the area? The exposed ridge sections (Boca do Risco and the Pico peaks) are particularly sensitive to wind and low visibility.
