The Vila Baleira – Pico do Facho hike is on Porto Santo island — it's not part of the official IFCN-recommended PR trail network that our data covers. It's a well-known local walking path on Porto Santo, but it doesn't have an official PR code, managed status, or entry in our trail database.
Here's what I can tell you from general knowledge:
Pico do Facho (517 m) is Porto Santo's most prominent peak, standing just northeast of Vila Baleira. The walk up from town is a popular, straightforward hike:
- Start: Vila Baleira (the island's main town) — the trailhead is typically found on the road heading northeast toward the peak
- End: Summit of Pico do Facho, with 360° panoramic views over the entire island, the golden sand beach (Praia de Porto Santo), the harbour, and across to Madeira on clear days
- Distance: ~3–4 km one way (approx. 6–8 km round trip)
- Difficulty: Easy–Moderate — a steady uphill on a dirt/stone track, no technical difficulties
- Time: ~1–1.5 hours up, ~45 min back down
- Highlights: Views from the summit, the cross and orientation table at the top, and at dawn/dusk you may be able to spot the Ilhas Desertas and Madeira's peaks
- Best time: Early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday sun — Porto Santo has very little tree cover
Note: This is not an official IFCN-registered PR trail, so we don't have its real-time open/closed status or a detailed route card. The path is widely used and generally accessible year-round, but check locally for any temporary closures.
Since the trail isn't in our official database, I can't confirm its current status — but the walk is a local favourite and one of Porto Santo's top vantage points.
Would you like me to check the weather forecast for Porto Santo for the day you're planning to go, or look into how to get to Porto Santo (ferry or flight) if you're coming from Madeira?
