OpenMadeira launches the most connected AI assistant for the Madeira Islands
A multilingual island guide that watches local TV news and relays it in your language, tracks live flights into Funchal, plans bus-ferry-flight journeys across the archipelago, and backs every answer with a clickable source.
FUNCHAL, Madeira โ 30 June 2026 โ OpenMadeira today launched the most connected AI assistant for the Madeira Islands, a conversational guide that doesn't just search the web but actively works the island's live data for you. It watches Madeira's Portuguese-language TV news and summarizes it in your own language, tracks the aircraft circling Funchal's notoriously tricky airport in real time, and stitches together a bus-to-ferry-to-flight journey across the archipelago, with every answer grounded in a source you can click.
Most travel chatbots paraphrase whatever a general search engine already indexed. OpenMadeira connects directly to the island's live, local, often-overlooked sources, then puts a multilingual assistant on top that turns them into a straight answer. It draws on more than 35 live and official data sources across 18 specialist areas of island life, and 100% of its answers link back to the source, so anything it tells you can be checked.
"Madeira's most useful information lives on dozens of local sites the big search engines barely touch, and much of it is in Portuguese," said Sebastian Szczygiel of Madeira Friends Enterprise, LDA, the company behind OpenMadeira. "We connect straight to those live sources, keep them current on our own schedule, and let anyone get a real answer in their own language. That is the difference between a chatbot and an assistant that is genuinely connected to the island."

What no other assistant does
It watches Portuguese TV news so you don't have to. Each day OpenMadeira pulls the RTP Telejornal Madeira television bulletin, transcribes it, and gives you a clean, topic-by-topic summary in your own language (English, German, French, Spanish, Polish or Ukrainian), with a link back to the original video. The local story that mattered today, understood even if you don't speak a word of Portuguese.

It tracks the planes overhead, and tells you if yours can actually land. Funchal's airport is one of Europe's most demanding, with wind limits that change by direction. OpenMadeira shows live aircraft positions over Funchal (FNC) and Porto Santo (PXO) via Flightradar24, then goes further: it reads the current wind against the airport's official, direction-by-direction landing limits and tells you whether conditions allow a landing right now. Using the aviation forecast, it can even flag whether your flight tomorrow is at risk of a diversion.
It actually knows how to get around the whole island, and plans the trip end to end. Public transport beyond Funchal has always meant hunting through dozens of scattered PDF timetables. OpenMadeira has digitized the complete regional bus network (SIGA), every line, every stop, every departure, and turned it into something you can simply ask. Going from a village in the north to Porto Santo? It assembles the full multi-modal journey across local bus, drive, ferry and flight, ranks the options fastest-first, and computes every connection time exactly, so it can tell you the last safe bus to catch the ferry. No other tool plans a Madeira trip this completely.
It does the math on official data, and opens it to everyone. OpenMadeira reads Madeira's official gazette (JORAM) and public registries and extracts every grant, subsidy, and contract into structured data, so it can calculate answers a search engine never could: how much public funding a given organization has received, the biggest beneficiaries in a sector, or totals across years, each with the source act cited. It does the same for the region's official statistics (DREM), covering population, tourism, air traffic and more, normally buried in dashboards few people ever open and now answered in plain language with a chart. The transparency question that used to take a researcher an afternoon, answered in seconds.
It's grounded in real, on-the-ground video from people who know the island. OpenMadeira pairs its live data with a growing library of curated community videos: short clips of real places, contributed by locals and visitors, each tied to a location on the map, AI-transcribed and tagged, reviewed before it goes live, and credited to the person who filmed it. So when you ask about a viewpoint, a restaurant, or a beach, you can get an authentic look at it from someone who's actually been there, not just a stock photo.
Paste a link or an Instagram reel and it reads, transcribes, or summarizes it on the spot: that viral Madeira reel, explained in your language.
Plugged into the island, in real time
Beyond the headline tricks, OpenMadeira connects the everyday sources that big search engines barely re-index:
- Live hiking trail status, with official open/closed/restricted flags from the regional nature authority, layered with community ratings, reviews, and photos.
- What's on tonight: events, festivals, and cinema listings (with the all-important original-language vs. dubbed flag, and movie ratings).
- The best places to eat, stay and visit, drawing on Google and Tripadvisor together, with ratings side by side and the genuinely top-ranked spot surfaced, shown on a map.
- Live local news, aggregated and deduplicated across Madeira's outlets and the regional government's own announcements.
- Real-time conditions: weather and official warnings, air quality and Saharan-dust levels, the things that decide whether today is a beach day or a levada day.
